Case in Point: Toyota MR2
Three generations of this affordable mid-engine sports car (1984-2007) have earned Toyota legions of fans around the world.
In the U.S. market, Toyota offered the Mk I from 1985 through 1989 model years, the Mk II from 1991 through 1995, and the MR2 Spyder from 2000 through 2005.
The 2nd generation model was often referred to as the "Poor Man's Ferrari", such was its appeal and performance. All were performance bargains of their day, and continue to be sought after automobiles for their place in sports car history as some of the all-time best values.
Typical Toyota quality, with many of the major components such as engines and transmissions adopted from higher volume models such as the Celica and Camry help make maintenance and finding replacement parts less of a challenge than with more exotic machinery.
MSRP* prices for a new 1991 MR2 ranged from around $15k to $25k (turbo). Today solid examples can be found in the $4k to $6k range, even less if some work is needed. Similar rates of depreciation can be found for other models as well. In other words, if you want a sports car the price of admission is dramatically lower now than ever before.
