2007 Jaguar XK Coupe

The new Jaguar coupe was an awesome show car. I first saw it at the 2004 Detroit auto show and loved everything about the exterior. While the production car resembles it in silhouette and most details, I agree with the critics on this one. The grill looks like it could have come off a Taurus.

Designer Ian Callum cites safety regulations as the cause and he's probably right. Remember that beginning in 2006 in the European Union cars will have to meet pedestrian protection requirements (the US will follow suit some time down the road). That's right. When a car strikes a person there is supposed to be more crush space between the hood and the hard pieces underneath. That means higher hood lines and unsightly and bulky design compromises. I hope this isn't the wave of the future, but it means sleek, low front ends of years past are probably over for the time being.

The last Jaguar coupe, and every car before it, was not subject to these new regulations. This might be the beginning of a downhill trend for automobile styling. It would be a shame.

Beyond that it's powered by a 4.2 V8 of 300 hp and 310 ft-lb of torque. While not underpowered it is a bit heavy at some 3,500 lbs, though this is around 260 lbs less than the downright portly model it is replacing.
