2006 Honda S2000
By David Nguyen
A nimble, front engine, rear wheel drive, 2 seat convertible sports car. That pretty much sums up Honda's S2000. First introduced at the turn of the century with a 2.0 liter inline 4, it now sports a 2.2 liter version of the same basic engine, and a staggering readline of 8,000 rpm. If the engine were smaller it would seem right at home on a motorcycle. This is a very different car from the Miata.
With an engine set back behind the front axle line, and a well balanced chassis weighing less than 2,900 lbs, this is a screamer. For around $35,000 you can drive on off the new car lot and enjoy the fruits of Honda's labor of decades of motorcycle and Formula 1 experience wrapped up in one tight package.
Since the inline 4 doesn't have much torque, it appears that the next model that will replace the S2000 will have considerably more power, maybe a V6. And it will probably be a hardtop. Wait and see...
