2006 Chevrolet Camaro Concept
By Steve Ellenberg
The General unveiled a stunner of a concept vehicle: A Chevrolet Camaro show car that harks back to the first generation model of the late 1960's, complete with a V8, rear wheel drive layout. For now it's only a concept car, but who'd bet against a 2009/2010 time frame for production? With the show car featuring the engine from the standard Corvette, if it goes into production you know there will be a few specials with a Corvette Z06 powertrain shoehorned in.
With the Ford Mustang kicking off a muscle car revival in 2005, and the Dodge Challenger show car's recent unveiling, it is likely that Chevy will also jump back on the muscle car bandwagon and put the Camaro into production. With these retro (and yes they're retro no matter how the manufacturers spin it) muscle cars, it's all back to the future. Woodward Avenue is alive and well.
The market is salivating for this car, and there is no doubt demand is there if GM can deliver a good product (and stays in business long enough to do it). After a decade-long hiatus, it is almost certain that you'll be able to drive a Camaro off the showroom floor again in the not-too-distant future.
